Decorating Condos

Decorating a new place can be fun, but when you’re short on space, it can also be a challenge. • Take a cue from the condo’s design. Do you have large windows and an amazing skyline view? Integrate urban aspects into your décor, with sleek surfaces and chrome accents. Make that window the focal point, and arrange your furniture to make the most of the view. If wood floors and black hardware dominate the landscape of your place, look for furniture that goes with that aesthetic, perhaps choosing furniture with accents that match the tone of the wood.
• Make it your own. Choose items that are meaningful to you to include in your decorating scheme. Use paint or wallpaper to brighten your space and distinguish it from the other units in the building. Upgrade the lighting or switch out the hardware on the kitchen and bathroom cabinets, to create a look more in keeping with your personal style.
• Use color to your advantage. Too many colors can clutter up a space, but a bold accent wall can make a statement. Dark modern furniture can make a small place look larger, but so can lighter furniture that’s the right scale for the room. A monochromatic palette that’s carried throughout an open floor plan can be an extremely elegant look for a condo, but using a large piece of art for a focal point and carrying colors from that piece throughout your decorating scheme can be striking.
• Have a plan for keeping it clear of clutter. If you’re moving from a larger space, now is an excellent time to purge. Don’t bring anything into the condo until you know where it goes, and limit future purchases, to prevent your smaller space from becoming overloaded. Make a plan before you move in, and stick to it.
• Choose furnishings that pull double-duty. When your space is limited, look for pieces, like a storage ottoman or coffee table with drawers, which can serve more than one purpose.
• Let the light in. Light is important for a small space, so skip the heavy drapes in favor of sheer curtains or light-colored blinds. Place mirrors strategically, to make your space look large and help bounce light into dark corners.
• Look for furniture that makes a statement without crowding the room. Clean lines and appropriately sized pieces, in neutral colors that allow for stunning accents, will make your condo feel elegant and modern.
