Love Seats: Small Sofas for Your Space

When you are shopping for a sofa, do you get discouraged by the big, beautiful sofas that would dwarf your small living space? A loveseat may be just the right piece of furniture for you. Similarly, if you are in search of a small outdoor couch, a patio loveseat might be perfect for your outdoor space. Is a loveseat a sofa? More or less. Let’s take a closer look at this underrated piece of furniture.

What, exactly, is a loveseat? It is really just about size. While you can fit two or more people on a traditional sofa or couch, a loveseat sofa is designed to hold precisely two people. In fact, that’s how the loveseat got its name: it was meant as an intimate option for a romantic couple. Aside from its size, a loveseat functions exactly like a sofa. When you are shopping for a seating arrangement, you might choose a couch and loveseat, or you might decide to just pick one of the two. The most important thing is to measure your space, as well as the length, seat depth, height, and arm height of the furniture you’re considering. Think, too, about the logistics of placing the loveseat in your home. Where will it go? If you are buying a chaise or settee, does it need to be right or left-facing?  Style, color, and other factors can be considered once you know the furniture will fit into the space for which it’s intended. You will need to measure just as carefully for outdoor lounge sets, to prevent your patio from being overcrowded.

When it comes to style selection, you have about as much variety as you would with any size of the sofa. Consider the style of your home when you are determining the style of your loveseat. Is your décor mid-century modern, modern farmhouse, minimalist, traditional, or eclectic? You don’t have to stick to one interior design style, but make sure your loveseat works well with the furniture you already have. Loveseats come in many different styles, including modular, sectional, Chesterfield, Bridgewater, Camelback, Cabriole, recliner, settee, divan, chaise lounge, and more.

Next, consider fabric and price. Are you buying a loveseat that is part of a set with your sofa, or are you looking for a showstopper in velvet or linen? Luxury fabrics will have a higher price point, so consider your budget when you are choosing the look you love. You will also need to think about your lifestyle, and how the loveseat will be used. If you have children and dogs, a velvet loveseat in the family room is not likely to have a long lifespan.

Quality craftsmanship should be among your top priorities when you are buying a sofa or loveseat. Good furniture is an investment, but a well-made loveseat will last you for many years. Check the construction and the materials from which it is made, and ask how long you can reasonably expect it to last. Some furniture is warranted, for additional peace of mind.

Durability is important too, especially if the piece will see heavy use. If children and pets will be using the loveseat, you will probably want washable, durable fabric. For an outdoor loveseat, look for something that is weather resistant, rust-proof, and water-resistant. Whether indoors or outdoors, look for a loveseat that is easy to maintain and resistant to stains.

Comfort is the next factor, and that involves more than the softness and support of the cushions or the feel of the fabric. Think about the proportions of the loveseat, and how they will work with the frame of your body. Consider, too, how you will be using this piece of furniture. If you plan to nap on it, overstuffed arms may be a boon, while if you want it for a more formal living room, something sleeker or tufted may be perfect. Think about details. Do you want attached or detached cushions? Do you like a skirt to hide whatever falls under the sofa, or do you prefer the clean look of a mid-century modern loveseat? Last but not least, think about sustainability. It is not always possible to find furniture that is eco-friendly and sustainably sourced, but it is preferable, so ask plenty of questions when you are shopping.
